So Clothes & Yet So Far

Rock n’ Tweed (part deux)

I had forgotten about the last rock ‘n tweed entry until I went to save these photos and saw I already had some by the same name… Oops.  But I think its okay to post both of these (even so close together) because I don’t feel like they really resemble each other.  The first one has a much more casual, laid back feel, while this one seems more glam… Pretty much what one would expect when switching from a lighter pallet to an almost completely black one.

Also, I wouldn’t be surprised if the next tweed outfit I post has a bit of a rock vibe.  I tend to do that with strong pieces.  I like to pair them with pieces that have an opposite feel rather than a similar one.  I don’t usually take a look and run with it.  Usually. I’m sure there are exceptions.  In fact, an outfit I wore recently on my birthday comes to mind.  Oh well.

I’ve seen a lot of bloggers pull up and belt their long skirts to turn them into dresses, so when I found this in my mom’s closet (I don’t think I’ve ever see her wear it), I immediately started planning this outfit.  Some people go to thrift stores…I just go down the hall!  It’s even cheaper than Good Will.

I feel like such a full, not to mention busy, skirt requires a substantial, wooden heel to ground it.  Next time I wear it, I’m thinking I might put it with these Sam Edelman leopard print clogs I just ordered… I have been kind of unsure how I feel about the recent clog trend, but these just seemed too fun to pass up.  They allude to the trend without being swallowed up by it.  We will see if they sway me to the pro-clog side once and for all.

Inspiration: The Bright Blues

A quick post… I really like this combination of blues.  There is something really fresh about it.  That being said, I think it works best when one of the colors is added only as an accessory, or perhaps as a subtle accent in a print.  In other words, I think that if you choose a main piece in the royal blue, the aqua should be added in small doses.  Thoughts?  I’d love for you to prove me wrong!

I’m no longer sure exactly how this outfit came together.  If I had to guess, I’d say it was inspired by the jacket, which is a black, gold, and turquoise tweed motorcycle jacket from Urban Outfitters.  I’d say I decided to play up the rock n’ roll element of the jacket with a cotton tee, light jeans and studded platform heels.  But, what do I know?

I wore this to my friends birthday party.  It was a very late, very great night.  I have good associations with this outfit. :)

Inspiration: Not the Fourth of July

I wore this outfit for a casual Friday at work before the 4th of July was even a blip on my social calendar.  Regardless, there is something very summery about a patriotic palette.  However, I feel like the addition of the gold and cognac accessories and the fact that the shirt is cream instead of white keep it from looking like I just wrapped myself in a flag.

I love these trouser-like shorts.  I acquired them and several other gems when my mom cleaned out her closet a couple months ago.

Just a quick outfit post.  Trying to get caught up.

Going to NYC this weekend to look at apartments.  “What?” you say.  “You’re moving to New York?”  Yes, yes I am.  In a month!  Ahhhh!  I have no job yet, though, so if you know of any openings, please send them my way.

As for packing, Lyon and I will be doing a lot of walking in the very, very hot New York summer sun, so I’m thinking lots of cotton, lots of shorts and dresses, lots of sandals, and absolutely nothing that will require dry cleaning when I get home.  Don’t want to have to deal with it.

Comments

So apparently when I changed my theme, I lost the ability to allow people to add comments…. Apparently that is something that is only easily done if you use one of the “featured” themes on tumblr.  That means that I will have to figure out how to add custom coding to this theme…  I know a little CSS, but I’ve only used it in WordPress where I’ve been able to see what I’m working with.  Any suggestions?

Obviously, you’ll have to email them to me…boo.  Just click on the left triangle under my profile pic to “ask me anything,” or in this case, tell me.

Inspiration: The Great Outdoors

Those of you who found my blog via Jessica of What I Wore will probably remember this outfit.  I submitted it as part of her safari style challenge.  That was three weeks ago, and I had already taken this photo weeks before she announced the challenge.  That should give you an idea of about how far behind I am.  I am taking photos so much faster than I can post them.  I need to come up with a better plan….  How do the rest of you do it?

Anyway, back to the outfit.  This was inspired by a look I saw in a J.Crew catalog.  The model had on a blue and white gingham button down, leopard peep-toe flats, and an army green jacket.  I really liked the idea of being able to mix such dramatically different prints by keeping the color palette fairly neutral.  This was the spin I put on the look.  (I’ve really been loving conac and black together.)  It’s a little safari, a little lumber jack, and a little rugged.

I’d also like to point out this awesome necklace.  It is made of polished lava rock and set off by one gold, pebble-shaped bead.  I got it at the spring Bayou City Art Festival.  I wish I could remember who the artist was; I’d like to give them the credit.  It really is such a fun piece.

Inspiration Success:

This is another rare case of inspiration resulting in a successful outfit straight from my closet - no purchase necessary.  As I have said before, too often the outfit inspirations have the negative side effect of purchase inspirations.  I was inspired to put this outfit together by a look I saw in Lucky Magazine (sorry, no scan).  I don’t think I ever realized how well an a-line dress and boxy jacket can work together until I tried this, but I loved it!

The sleeves on the jacket were 3/4, but I tend to take all my jacket sleeves and roll or scrunch them up to my elbows because I find it really helps to visually nip in the appearance of my long torso.

These shoes were my first wedges.  I didn’t think I liked the look wedges before, but these little guys made me a convert.  There is something so organic yet rich looking about the combination of the simple straps and the wooden wedge heel.  I later bought them in white as well.

What was black is now white:

Okay, so a couple changes in this post.  I haven’t really had the time necessary to figure out how apply/design all the things necessary to customize this blog and really make it look the way I would like, but the black was really bringing me down.  I originally chose it because I wanted to put a black fade on my photos to try and hide some of the clutter in the background, but since I have abandoned that practice (and now switched photo locations!), I decided to get rid of the black as well.

Eventually there will be a custom header and other good stuff…at least that is what I keep telling myself.  I am moving to New York City in August and have yet to find a job, so maybe I will have lots of free time then… gulp.

As for the outfit… I try to only look at magazines and blogs for inspiration in the sense of color combinations and proportions rather than product/purchase ideas, but I generally fail at this.  Big time.  Anyway, this outfit represents one of the increasingly fewer times that I felt inspired but didn’t feel like I had to buy anything!  This color combination feels slightly off — thus the basis of it’s whole appeal.
